“アース” (Āsu) in Japanese refers to the earth wire in an electrical circuit—
a channel that carries excess or dangerous current safely into the ground.
In everyday usage, Āsu has also come to describe the instant when an appliance short-circuits or leaks electricity.
In Taiwan, when something like that happens, we instinctively shout “Āsu”
A sound like the spark that leaps out when wires touch,
and also the brief cry the body releases in a moment of shock.
Sometimes, when encountering something unexpectedly brilliant,
or when a stubborn thought suddenly becomes clear,
it feels like a current slipping out of its original circuit—
entering the body through a tiny point of contact,
rushing downward, scattering wildly to the feet,
and in an instant, grounding itself into the earth.
“Āsu” happens in that split second
when a feeling arrives
and language has not yet caught up.
